YouTube v12.03 hints at smart auto-download for offline viewing, picture-in-picture support for Android TV, and viewer polls [APK Teardown]

YouTube has accumulated a long list of features waiting to be released – some discovered during teardowns and some even announced. The version that started rolling out late yesterday doesn’t appear to have introduced anything like live broadcasts or a large version of the quick search button, but it does add to the list of things we know are coming. An APK teardown highlights a new feature to intelligently populate a device with videos for offline enjoyment, online polls for live viewers, and picture-in-picture support on AndroidTV.

Automatic offline

Last year, as I waited in line to board a plane after covering CES, I anxiously watched the YouTube app as a set of progress bars crept in slowly – very slowly – from one end to the other. I had loaded up a decent playlist to enjoy on my flight to Las Vegas, but forgot to load up some new videos for the trip home. Not all of them were done, but I had enough to get to my layover.

It’s not hard to plan ahead for some things, but you won’t always remember to do small chores, or you just might not have enough time when it matters. To possibly save other people from a situation like I was in, YouTube seems to be working on a new feature called AutoOffline. In short, YouTube will be able to automatically save videos to a user’s phone every day for offline playback.

Think this sounds familiar? He probably should. The YouTube Music app for Red subscribers offers exactly the same functionality as Offline Mixtape. The standard YouTube app will obviously steer away from exclusive storage of music videos, but the text doesn’t specify how they are chosen.

These channels seem to suggest that new videos are picked up and uploaded daily, and can only include priceless ones. If you’re wondering about setting storage limits, maybe download times, allowed connection types, and any other options you might be interested in… Sorry, you won’t see those answers just yet . It’s pretty clear that it’s not ready to launch, so those details will have to come with future updates.

Survey your audience

While YouTube has been inexplicably silent on specifics or a delay to add live streaming to its mobile app, there’s still work to be done to create a feature set that goes beyond just video streaming. The latest update includes a pair of new layouts that represent an interface for setting up question and answer polls for viewers.

The layouts currently consist of a button to start a poll, a few more to add and remove options, and a text field with a character counter. It’s not very elaborate, and maybe not even finished yet. Still, it’s clear that YouTube wants to give channel operators a way to get quick feedback from their audiences that doesn’t involve wading through the bustle of a comments section.

Picture-in-picture support

This one shouldn’t require much explanation. In fact, it will, but we’ll get to that. Either way, the point is pretty simple: YouTube is going to support Picture-in-Picture (PiP). A flag has been added to WatchWhileActivity that marks it as supporting PiP mode.
