Xiaomi Auto Technology patents an internal EV charging system

Lei Jun still seems pretty insistent that he will see his company Xiaomi become an electric vehicle maker before his term as CEO ends. The major global electronics company encountered more obstacles than it could have imagined on its way to crossing that line; however, with its own new proprietary Charging IP, it could now be closer than ever to a milestone.

Xiaomi Auto Technology now has its patent for what it calls a “charging device, method, device, vehicle, electronic device and storage medium” approved by China CNIPA. The documentation, now also put online by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), thus describes the technology as what could be an end-to-end charging system, which could also integrate into a home or business network on a “clever” or automatic.

Therefore, equipment based on this IP could bring Xiaomi (which is already no stranger to advanced charging technology) one step closer to mass production of a first-generation electric vehicle. Then again, potential customers might find such an apparent lack of compatibility with more universal car chargers a downside in their next vehicle.
