VLC media player revitalizes its Android Auto app in latest update

Regardless of the device, VLC is pretty much essential for all of your video, audio, and streaming needs. It’s always one of the first apps I download when setting up a new computer, and it just keeps getting better with every new update. It’s been over two months since we’ve seen the beta of VLC 3.4, but it’s finally ready for prime time.

As we saw initially in July, this update focuses on VLC’s audio capabilities, adding a whole new interface to its music player. While it’s still not the prettiest user interface you’ll find on the Play Store, it’s a huge improvement over its old look. Bookmarks are also out of beta, perfect for marking your place in three-hour audiobooks or podcasts. VLC has also made it easy to use without permissions, allowing network streams even if you haven’t granted it access to files.

A small but significant change comes to the integration experience. With a new start screen now available the first time the app is accessed, it should be easier to familiarize new users with how the app works. It’s also coming in the Android TV version, with updated UI player tips.

Finally, the app’s Android Auto interface is brand new, perfect for anyone who relies on VLC as their primary media service. With shortcuts to playlists, library, and network feeds, it’s now faster to access podcasts, albums, and even live events, all while keeping your eyes on the road.
